Schnauzer Tip of The Day
Prevent Painful Ear Infections in Your Miniature Schnauzer With This DIY Mix
As a miniature schnauzer owner, you know those cute floppy ears are prone to painful infections.
The good news is you can help prevent many ear infections by doing weekly ear cleanings with an inexpensive, easy-to-make solution.
Simply mix equal parts white vinegar and water to create your homemade ear wash.
The vinegar's acidity helps kill bacteria and fungus that can lead to infections. The water dilutes the vinegar so it's gentle on your schnauzer's delicate ear canals.
For the cleaning process, soak a cotton ball with the vinegar solution. Gently wipe out the inner ear flap and as far into the ear canal as your finger can comfortably reach.
Don't insert anything forcefully into the ear canal. Use a fresh cotton ball for each ear.
After cleaning, allow your schnauzer to shake their head to remove excess solution. Wipe away any drainage from the outer ear with a soft cloth.
Weekly ear cleanings combined with monthly hair plucking around the ears can significantly reduce your miniature schnauzer's risk of chronic, painful ear infections.
Plus this simple vinegar solution beats pricey pet store ear washes. Your mini will shake their head "yes" to this budget-friendly preventative care!

Trivia Answer
Miniature schnauzers have a double coat consisting of a wiry outer coat and a soft, dense undercoat.
While their outer coat is low-shedding, which makes them a better choice for people with allergies, the undercoat can still become matted if not properly groomed regularly.
To prevent matting of the undercoat, miniature schnauzers require the following grooming:
Brushing: Regular brushing, at least once a week, is essential to remove loose hair and prevent the undercoat from becoming tangled and matted. Use a slicker brush or a grooming rake to thoroughly brush through the undercoat, paying special attention to areas where matting is more likely to occur, such as behind the ears, under the legs, and around the belly.
Stripping: Miniature schnauzers need to be hand-stripped two to four times a year to remove the dead outer coat. This process involves plucking out the old, wiry hair with a stripping knife or stripping stone to allow new growth and maintain the breed's distinctive wiry texture.
Trimming: The schnauzer's distinctive beard, eyebrows, and leg furnishings need regular trimming to maintain their neat appearance and prevent matting.
Bathing: Regular bathing, every 4-6 weeks, can help loosen and remove loose undercoat hair, preventing matting. Use a high-quality dog shampoo and conditioner suitable for their coat type.
Regular grooming, including brushing, stripping, trimming, and bathing, is essential to maintain the miniature schnauzer's coat health and prevent matting of the undercoat, even though their wiry outer coat sheds minimally.
