Schnauzer Tip of The Day

A Natural Flea and Tick Deterrent for Your Schnauzer

As a schnauzer owner, you want to keep your furry friend happy, healthy, and free from annoying pests like fleas and ticks.

While there are plenty of chemical-based preventatives on the market, some pet parents prefer exploring more natural alternatives.

One easy and effective option is to add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to your schnauzer's shampoo.

Peppermint oil contains natural compounds like menthol that are extremely unpleasant for biting insects. The strong aroma basically tells fleas and ticks to keep away from your pup.

To use it, simply add 3-5 drops of 100% pure peppermint essential oil to your schnauzer's regular doggy shampoo before bath time. Lather up as usual, taking care to avoid getting any soap or oil in your pup's eyes.

While peppermint oil can provide effective, natural flea and tick protection, it's not a total substitute for other preventatives recommended by your vet.

But when combined with regular brushing, treating your home and yard, and vet-approved preventatives as needed, a minty fresh shampoo can be a great addition to your schnauzer's pest-battling routine.

Trivia Answer

The Miniature Schnauzer breed was created by crossing Standard Schnauzers with one or more smaller breeds to produce a downsized version with a similar hypoallergenic coat type.

However, the exact other breed(s) used in the original crosses to create the Miniature Schnauzer is not definitively known.

Some sources suggest that smaller terrier breeds like the Affenpinscher, German Pinscher, or English Black and Tan Terrier may have been crossed with Standard Schnauzers in the development of the Miniature variety in Germany in the late 19th century.

Others mention the Poodle or Miniature Poodle as a possible contributor to the Miniature Schnauzer's coat.

So while we know the Standard Schnauzer was instrumental in passing on the distinctive schnauzer coat to the Miniature variety, the precise other breed or breeds remain uncertain.

The hypoallergenic coat was likely achieved through selective breeding using smaller dogs with similar coat types crossed to the Standard Schnauzer foundation.
